Registered Nurses

Nursing position accountable for serving as a member of the medical treatment team. Accountable for overseeing more complex or sensitive care, participating as a member of multidisciplinary team providing direct care in a patient care setting, or providing nursing and health services in a public health program. May be responsible for mentoring or directing the work of lower level employees. May serve as a shift supervisor.

Licensed Practical Nurses

Nursing position accountable for administering medication and other prescribed treatments, taking vital signs, assisting with care plan activities, observing and reporting patient conditions and behaviors, and participating in rehabilitation, ambulation, and transfers. Communicates with doctors, patients, and families, and educates patients on care. May provide transport and/or escort to offsite appointments and application of restraints when necessary. Mentors and delegates work to CNAs.

Certified Nurse Aides

Support Care position accountable for taking vital signs, assisting with care plan activities, observing and reporting patient conditions and behaviors, and participating in rehabilitation, ambulation, and transfers. Communicates with doctors, patients, and families, and educates patients on care. May provide transport to offsite appointments when necessary.

Mental Health Technician

Support Care position accountable for taking vital signs, assisting with care plan activities, observing and reporting patient conditions and behaviors, and participating in rehabilitation, ambulation, and transfers. Communicates with doctors, patients, and families, and educates patients on care. May provide transport to offsite appointments and application of restraints when necessary.

General Maintenance

Vocational worker accountable for performing a variety of semi-skilled work in the alteration, maintenance, and repair of state buildings and facilities. Employees should have a general knowledge of a variety of trade areas including: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, plastering, and mechanical repair in settings such as facilities and grounds.

Police

Law enforcement position involves patrolling and enforcing relevant laws within Mississippi State Hospital. Work is performed under direct supervision of law enforcement staff/personnel of higher classifications. Assists on calls to provide Hospital security which involves responding to calls involving aggressive patients.

Social Workers

Work with individuals and groups to provide social services in a psychiatric/medical setting as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team to assess, treat and ensure the safety, stability and well-being of adults or children, and advocate on their behalf. Assist individuals deal with addictions and substance use disorders; family, parenting, and marital challenges; suicide; self-sufficiency; stress management; challenges with self-esteem; and concerns associated with the physical, cognitive/mental, and emotional health of the seriously mental ill, intellectual/developmental disabilities, child/adolescent, and geriatric populations.

Master’s Level Behavioral Health Clinicians

Professional who provides advanced clinical and behavioral services which may include assessment of behavioral health concerns, individual and group therapy, program development/implementation, and treatment outcome measurement. Under the direct supervision and oversight of an appropriately licensed or certified Behavioral Health professional, individuals in this classification also perform screening assessments of behavioral and emotional functioning, intelligence, achievement, and adaptive functioning. Incumbents in this classification are responsible for working closely with other professional disciplines such as psychiatry and social services, and they may also serve as members of, or consultants to, interdisciplinary teams. May serve in supervisory roles as based on organizational/facility guidelines, and may provide direct supervision to employees in less advanced classifications.

Recreation Therapists

Professional position accountable for planning, directing and coordinating complex recreation-based or music-based treatment programs for people with disabilities, injuries or illnesses. Accountable for assessing patients, performing treatment planning, facilitating activities, using and maintaining therapy equipment, and maintaining documentation. Incumbents direct and participate in recreational activities for residents at state facilities and in programs for the rehabilitation or restoration of the mentally and physically ill patients and residents.

Specialized Trades Workers 
(HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical Work) 

Vocational position accountable for performing various, singularly focused, and basic manual tasks that can be learned with short on the job training. Assists journey level employees and follows specific and detailed procedures and practices as instructed. Tasks performed require use of basic tools and equipment under supervision.
